When to visit

Best Time to Visit the Costa del Sol: Season by Season

The Costa del Sol has one of the mildest climates in Europe, but "best time to visit" really depends on what you want — sunshine, quiet beaches, or the lowest prices. Here's how each season actually plays out.

With over 300 sunny days a year, there's no genuinely bad time to visit the Costa del Sol — but the difference between July and November is still huge, in both crowds and price. Here's what to expect month by month.

Spring (March–May): warming up, still quiet

Spring is when the coast wakes up. March and April are variable — some weeks are warm and sunny, others bring passing Atlantic showers — but by May the sea has warmed to a comfortable 19–20°C, daytime temperatures reach the low-to-mid 20s, and rain is rare. May is arguably the sweet spot of the year: full sunshine, uncrowded beaches, and prices well below summer peak.

Summer (June–August): peak season, and it earns it

June eases into summer with fewer crowds than July or August, while July and August bring the warmest sea (around 26°C) and daytime highs of 28–32°C. This is when the coast is at its busiest and most expensive — book well ahead if you're set on these months, especially for beachfront properties in Marbella or Fuengirola.

Autumn (September–October): the coast's best-kept secret

September holds onto summer warmth with noticeably thinner crowds and lower prices than August. October is excellent for walking, hiking and sightseeing, with warm days, though the second half of the month can bring more Atlantic rain systems. Many repeat visitors consider September the single best month on the coast.

Winter (November–February): mild, quiet, and the best value

This is where the Costa del Sol earns its "year-round" reputation — daytime temperatures still reach a mild 16–20°C, with sunny spells between occasional rainy periods, rarely dropping to anything resembling a northern-European winter. It's the lowest-price, lowest-crowd window of the year, and increasingly popular for longer stays.

If you had to pick one month: May and September consistently deliver the best balance of warm weather, thinner crowds and reasonable prices — genuine shoulder-season value without giving up the beach.
